This place is completely empty right now—like a house I’ve just moved into, or even an empty plot of land. I’ll fill it over time, with old things and new ones. My design decisions may change, shift, and evolve. This won’t be like a house fully furnished down to the last accessory, ready to be handed over to a client. It will be allowed to live, to choose, to change its mind, to lose things and gain others. It will take shape over time.
Sometimes the house will be a mess, and I’ll fall asleep on the sofa. Sometimes I’ll want everything neat and in its place. I’ll take my archives out of boxes, folders, and bookmarks and put them on the shelves; I’ll leave the things I no longer need out by the door.
Sometimes I’ll invite friends over, play music as loud as possible, and dance in front of the mirror. Other times, because the living room feels too lonely, I’ll sit in the kitchen and think for hours.
But the best part is that I finally have a home of my own. I can fill its walls however I like and share with everyone the world I manage to fit inside it.
This won’t be a “Look at my new sofa, and the custom-designed lamp I placed next to it!” kind of place.
For now, I’m afraid I’ll have to seat you on this stool.
